A Look at Sheep Wool Traditions and Practices for National Heritage Week 2023

Mary B. Davitt giving a wool spinning demonstration using her grandmother's big wheel
Mary O'Malley

Join us on Wednesday 16th August 2023, in Killeen Community Centre at 8pm, as we explore the role of sheep wool in our local community through the years.

Learn about the process involved in shearing the sheep, cleaning and washing the wool. What were the natural dyes used to colour the wool?

You can try your hand at teasing and carding wool.  We have a wool spinning demonstration using a local traditional West of Ireland Big Wheel, which is over one hundred and twenty years old.

We are delighted to also have Sharla Greenway from Louisburgh Community TV talk about the mini documentary she made about the process of sheep shearing to knitting the yarn.

We will also welcome the Louisburgh Area Men’s Shed with their unique Ashwood Country Spinner.

Lots of fun and a there are a few surprises too!

The event is FREE and suitable for all ages!
