A great crowd gathered at the square in Louisburgh to follow John Lyons, Local historian, on a very informative walking tour of the town.

Giving the history of the foundation of the town, using his unbelievable talent for dates and names, John brought us back in time to an era of English influence and local Irish resilience. The family names that lived in the area and the building not only of a town but the building of a community that has stood the test of time. Buildings that have been here since the foundation of the town, will now carry a more meaningful recognition owing to Johns stories of their use.

Two hours flew by while walking and everyone present commented on how fast the time had gone by, being enthralled with John’s recollection of various facts and stories. We could have spent much more time listening to John.

We really appreciate John taking the time to bring us on the history tour of Louisburgh as part of our National Heritage Week free events for August 2022.

Thanks to all who participated in the walk.

Gratitude to Mayo County Council Heritage Officer, Deirdre Cunningham, for her support with Heritage Week 2022.
