In 2022 Louisburgh Area Men’s Shed, LAMS, together with Louisburgh-Killeen Heritage created a short movie depicting what a Day in the Bog was like.

Filmed on location in Louisburgh and starring members of LAMS this short film gives a glimpse into the past and really describes the cutting, saving, footing and bringing home of turf.

A public premiere of the movie was held in Louisburgh Town Hall on 18th March 2023 with a packed audience in attendance. Donations were accepted at the door and a monster raffle was held afterwards.

All proceeds from the family fun night were presented to Louisburgh Foróige club.

The youth are creating a special space upstairs in the town hall to begin recording and editing podcasts from Louisburgh.

We were delighted to welcome Michael Keane Chairman of Castlebar Men’s shed who spoke so passionately about the value of having a Men’s Shed in the community.

It is a place for men to meet and share ideas, develop local projects and host speakers on a range of topics. But most importantly, over a cup of tea, it is an outlet for men to talk to one another about everything and anything; creating friendships and overcoming isolation.

Here in Louisburgh’s rural community with over thirty men registered in LAMS it is a vital way to keep connected.

LAMS are currently awaiting confirmation on a site and building that will become a permanent home for Louisburgh Area Men’s Shed. They will no doubt make it a special place for all the projects that they are undertaking and will welcome any community groups to support them.

Michael McGuire from Louisburgh Foróige expressed heartfelt thanks from all the members of Foróige for the generous support that LAMS have given in helping the youth fulfil a dream to build a podcasting room.

He also spoke about the amazing connection between the experienced men of the area who are imparting so much knowledge and skills to the youth of Louisburgh through their engagement with various projects.

The youth are the future and are learning so much from their time working with LAMS.

The LAMS have been busy every Saturday and some late weekday nights too turning a regular room into a state of the art tech room.

Combined with the generous donations on this premiere night, the youth will very shortly start podcasting from the heart of Louisburgh!

After the premiere we were entertained by members of Louisburgh Area Men’s Shed singing and playing some old time favourites.

Plenty of chat over a cup of tea and cake ensured a wonderful night out at the “Movies”.

It was a privilege to work along side the LAMS in creating this movie and we are already working on another exciting movie.

It is always so heartening to see an idea come to life and along the way bring so many other community groups together.

We are truly blessed in Louisburgh-Killeen to be constantly surprised and overwhelmed by the community response to our little projects.

We care about our local traditions and want to share the past by recording and archiving it for the future.

Special word of thanks to Brendan Gilmartin Professional Videographer & Photographer for his skills and support with recording and editing this project.

Thanks to the amazing team MW Design Print Signs for ensuring our pull up banners were printed on time!

Thanks to James Ryan from Climate Action Louisburgh Locality, CALL for use of projector and screen at the premiere.

Thanks to all the Foróige members and their leaders who helped with the refreshments and raffle, many hands made light of the work.

Thanks also to Jim Corrigan for taking some wonderful photos on the night of the premiere.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video “A Day in the Bog” which was sent to me by my cousin Mags Joyce. I also recognized several people that my late husband and I met during our visits to Louisburgh and the village of Derreen, birthplace of my paternal grandfather, James Kilcoyne. I hope to get back to your beautiful county Mayo at least one more time, God willing.
