Canon Eugene O. Nee

Canon Eugene O. Nee, originally from Curradavitt, Louisburgh, celebrated his Golden Jubilee Mass at Knock Shrine on 6th June. Seventeen priests and a Deacon concelebrated mass with more than 400 guests, including his two brothers from New York, Paddy and Vincent Nee, nineteen nieces and nephews and relatives and friends from the all over the United States, Britain, and Ireland.

Lively festivities followed at the McWilliams Hotel, Claremorris with the Seamus Heneghan Band from Louisburgh performing traditional Irish music. Good food, dancing and song continued into the night with Fr. Nee cutting the cake at 10:30pm. An open microphone showcased good singers from the crowd and Sean Hegarty and Frank Baynes entertained all on the accordion. The following day, revellers attended 11:45am Saturday mass celebrated by Fr. Nee in the apparition chapel at Knock. The crowd then moved on to Killeen, Louisburgh for 10am Sunday Mass. The choir, under the direction of Pauline O’Grady, was outstanding. The community centre at Killeen hosted a lovely tea with speeches, dancing, and music with Frank Baynes & company on accordions into the afternoon.

To complete the weekend, from 9pm until after midnight, the crowd enjoyed good music, song and dance at the Ocean View Lodge in Killadoon, Louisburgh.

It was an action packed Golden Jubilee weekend for all. In a year-long international recognition of his fifty years as a priest, Fr. Nee began his celebrations in March in San Antonio, Texas, USA, where he was first appointed as a priest. Later that month, he concelebrated mass with Cardinal Timothy Dolan at New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral on St. Patrick’s Day. Later this year, he will celebrate masses with family and friends in England, Medjugorie, and Rome.
