21st Aug 22- Mayo Holy Wells Project

It was lovely to meet with Tamlyn McHugh of Fadó Archaeology at Kilgeever on Sunday 21st August 22. She has been commissioned by Mayo County Heritage Office, funded by The Heritage Council, to record, collect and compile as much information as she can on Mayo’s holy wells. There are 146 Holy Well recorded for County Mayo in the Archaeological Survey of Ireland.
It is such an important part of our life here in Kilgeever Parish, we are delighted to assist with this project. All data complied will be available to the public afterwards.
I am sure many of you have heard stories about the widely held belief that Kilgeever Holy Well has a cure for sore eyes and blindness? There are many more stories among our community that are associated with the traditional pilgrimage to the Holy Well.
If you would like to get involved in sharing these memories and stories please get in touch with us: Email lkheritage@gmail.com or you can contact Tamlyn directly on 086 8706529 or email info@fadoarchaeology.com.
Looking forward to hearing more about this project over the coming year.
