Kilgeever Holy Well

Beside the entrance to the graveyard in Kilgeever is a spring well. This well is known locally as “Tobar Rí an Dhomhnaigh” meaning “Our Lord’s Well Of The Sabbath”. In the past pilgrims would come to take part in the Stations of the Cross on July 15th which was the Festival of the Apostles. Nowadays pilgrims visit the well as part of their pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick on Reek Sunday, the last Sunday of July.

The traditional stations for pilgrimage are outlined on a plaque at the gate of the graveyard. Some pilgrims have over the years inscribed crosses on the rocks around where the stations are performed. Before leaving the Holy Well pilgrims would pray for Henry Murphy of Castlebar who had the cross erected over the well.

Kilgeever Holy Well is part of the Clew Bay Heritage & Archaeological Trail and more information can be found at www.clewbaytrail.com
