Horse Racing in the West
Summer Time Festivals
With the revival of the Carrowniskey races in 2010 many memories have been recalled of the great summer festivals in Louisburgh and Killeen.
If anyone can recall the words to this song and possibly some more information it would be greatfully appreciated. It is an occassion of fun and wonder, laughter in the rain and a gathering of locals and visitors alike to a very enjoyable and, in these trying times, an affordable day out. If you have any stories of trying to get the chores finished in time for the races, or memories of the excitment to the big day, or any photographs please forward them to our editors and they will include them on this website for enjoyment by all for many years to come.
The Races Of Killadoon
"Have you ever been to Louisburgh in the summer time of year,
There isn't a finer place to go for contentment and good cheer,
I was there a couple of years ago and I'm going back again,
For I cannot forget all the thrills I get at the Races of Killadoon.
The three o'clock race did not take place 'cause the tide had not gone out,
The next event was a novelty, twas the ladies egg and spoon,
I bet on a grey but she lost her way, at the Races of Killadoon"
Did John Duggan write the words?
What involvement did Sean Ban Breanach have in the production of the song?
