Glen Keen Farm

The Glen Keen Farm is one of the largest farms in Irelands agri-tourism offering, over 1,400 acres in size, this is a single family-owned sheep farm with a commonage that extends to over 5,500 acres. Glen Keen is located on the Wild Atlantic Way, 6.2 miles from Louisburgh on the Leenane road (R335). The farm is open for tourists while still maintaining a working sheep farm.

There is much to see with a craft shop offering many locally made produce, a delicious tearooms & cafe, a visitor centre with a capacity for 250 guests, while a whole range of activities can be pre booked and catered for; The Farm Experience, Meet the Farm Animals, Traditional Turf Cutting, Sheep Herding Demonstrations, Sheep Shearing Demonstrations (seasonal), Traditional Tea rooms, Nature Walks, Children’s Play Area, Peatland Habitats, Archaeological Sites, Famine Walk & Demonstrations.

The owners Catherine & Jim have worked extremely hard to realise their dream of opening the Farm to a broader range of activities. The advent of the Wild Atlantic Way has indeed added to the new venture as its location is second to none. To drive from Louisburgh along the rugged lonely famine road towards Delphi is now brightened by a stop in Glen Keen where there is always something going on.

Despite the harsh years of the famine the Farm has come full circle back to the family again. In 1846/47 William O’Malley was evicted from the farm and he settled a few miles the opposite side of Louisburgh, in Bouris. His granddaughter Margaret Mc Namara married Hugh O’Grady in 1909 and they settled in Shrarooskey. After the Congested District boards stripped and divided the lands previously owned by Landlords, the O’Grady family moved back to Glen Keen. It is truly wonderful that their granddaughter Catherine & her husband are still farming & working the lands in Glen Keen.

We wish them every sucess with the new venture and if you are travelling along the Wild Atlantic Way a warm welcome awaits you in Glen Keen.
