Delivering the Turf to Louisburgh

Before oil or gas were the common heating sources in houses, the humble sod of turf was the only fuel to heat the house, to cook with and to ensure hot water was available.

This photo evokes some lovely memories of an almost lost tradition. The huge load of turf being emptied on to the street, then having to bring it either by wheelbarrow or bags through the town house to the back, where a small garden shed would be filled. You may only have an adult stacking the turf in the shed as each sod was precious and when stacked correctly would stay in position till needed.

A good load of turf ensured a warm house for the winter.
